1. The Obstacle Course

The workhorse of a school carnival. It absorbs the biggest share of the crowd, it self-organizes into a line, and it runs on two volunteers instead of five. If your blacktop or field has a long straight run, this is the first thing to place on the map.

2. The Combo Bounce House

Bounce area plus a slide in one footprint. This is the unit for the younger grades — TK through second — and it belongs at the opposite end of the yard from the obstacle course so the age groups stop colliding in the middle.

3. Interactive Games

Joust, wrecking ball, and similar head-to-head units. These are the ones the fifth and sixth graders line up for twice. They also make the best photos, which matters more than it sounds when the PTA is recruiting volunteers for next year's event.

4. Concessions
