The Evolution of a Birthday Party Since 2009: What's Changed (And What Never Will)

When Larry and I took over Astro Jump of Atlanta in 2009, Facebook was just becoming part of everyday life, smartphones were still fairly new, and birthday parties looked a little different than they do today.

Since then, we have had the privilege of helping with thousands of celebrations across Metro Atlanta.

We have watched party trends come and go.

Some changes have been incredible.

Others have made us laugh.

But one thing has never changed.

Kids still get just as excited when they see a giant inflatable in their yard.

Here is a look back at how birthday parties have evolved over the years.

In 2009...

Most invitations were still paper.

Parents handed them out at school or mailed them to family and friends.

Today?

Most invitations arrive with a quick text, email, or online invitation.

It is certainly easier but we kind of miss seeing refrigerators covered with birthday invitations.

Party Themes Have Become Bigger Than Ever

Years ago, many parties were simple.

A favorite color.

Princesses.

Pirates.

Sports.

Now?

We have seen incredible themes inspired by movies, video games, social media trends, favorite TV characters, and just about anything else you can imagine.

Parents are amazingly creative.

Pictures Have Changed Everything

Back in 2009, people might take a few dozen pictures during a party.

Today, phones capture hundreds of photos and videos before the cake is even cut.

Parents can instantly share those memories with family members across the country.

And we're all pretty sure at least one grandparent is saving every single picture.

Water Slides Have Become Summer Favorites

We have always loved bounce houses.

But over the years, we have seen more and more families choose water slides to help beat the Georgia heat.

On those hot summer afternoons, it is easy to understand why.

Backyard Parties Are More Popular Than Ever

One of our favorite trends is seeing families spend more time celebrating at home.

There is something special about gathering in your own backyard, inviting neighbors and family, firing up the grill, and letting kids spend the day laughing together.

Some of the most memorable parties we've ever seen were not the biggest.

They were simply filled with the right people.

Parents Have More to Plan

Today's birthday parties often include:

  • Custom decorations
  • Personalized cookies
  • Balloon displays
  • Party favors
  • Photo backdrops
  • Coordinated colors
  • Entertainment
  • Music playlists

It's impressive...

But it can also feel overwhelming.

Kids Haven't Changed Nearly As Much

Here's the funny part.

While birthday parties have become more elaborate...

Kids are still happiest doing the same things they've always loved.

Running.

Laughing.

Playing with friends.

Sliding down a water slide over and over again.

Eating cake.

Opening presents.

Sometimes the simplest moments are still the best ones.

Our Favorite Change

One thing we've noticed over the years is that parents are becoming more intentional about making memories.

They are taking more pictures.

Including grandparents.

Inviting neighbors.

Creating traditions.

Making birthdays about experiences instead of just presents.

We think that's a wonderful change.

If I could go back and give parents one piece of advice in 2009, it would be the same advice I would give today.

Take more pictures that include you.

Parents are usually the ones behind the camera.

Years from now, your children won't just want pictures of the party.

They will want pictures with their mom laughing beside them...their dad racing them down the slide...their grandparents cheering them on.

Those are the photos that become family treasures.

Some Things Never Change

After all these years, we have learned something important.

Party themes change.

Technology changes.

Decorations change.

Music changes.

Social media changes.

But one thing never changes...

The excitement on a child's face when they realize today is their special day.

That's been true in 2009.

It's true today.

And we hope it will still be true for many birthdays to come.
