Marin and SF School Halloween Carnivals: What PTA Volunteers Ask Before Booking
Last updated: October 2026
Quick Answer
Volunteers at schools in San Rafael, Novato, Mill Valley and San Francisco rarely open with a question about the units. They open with access: will it fit through the gate, what happens on a yard that slopes, and who is carrying blowers up a flight of steps. Halloween is Saturday, October 31, which leaves six weekend dates on the October calendar for a campus carnival: Friday and Saturday, October 16 and 17, 23 and 24, and 30 and 31.
A carnival on a Marin or San Francisco campus is rarely limited by the yard. It is limited by the path to the yard. The questions below are the ones volunteers ask first in this part of the North Bay, in roughly the order they come up, and each one has an answer that is easier to give in October than on the Friday before the event.
Access Decides the Unit, Not the Other Way Around
The first question is almost always about the gate. A unit arrives rolled and strapped on a hand truck, and the narrowest point on the route sets the ceiling on what can be delivered: the pedestrian gate, the turn at the top of a stairwell, the width between a planter and a fence. Measure the narrowest point, not the widest, and measure it where the handles would be rather than at the frame.
The second is about slope. Hillside campuses in Mill Valley and the older yards in San Francisco frequently have a grade across them that is invisible until something has to sit level on it. A yard with a visible run-off slope needs the flattest rectangle on the site identified and measured on its own, and a terraced yard is really two small sites rather than one large one. The third is about load-in: a shared or street-side lot means the truck has a window, not a morning, and that window has to line up with when the gate is unlocked and the yard is clear of parked cars.

Four Setups That Work on Tight Marin and SF Campuses
1. One compact unit in the flattest rectangle on site
On a small or sloped yard, the honest move is to find the single flat rectangle, measure it, and put one unit in it. Volunteers often want two and end up with one working station and one that sits on a grade and has to be shut down. One unit placed where it is genuinely level runs for the whole carnival.
2. A courtyard setup with the queue routed along a wall
San Francisco campuses often have a courtyard rather than a yard, which is usable if the line has somewhere to go. Run the queue along a wall instead of across the open space, keep the exit on the opposite side from the entrance, and the courtyard holds more families than its square footage suggests. Note any doors that have to stay clear.
3. Two terraces treated as two separate stations
A terraced Mill Valley or Novato campus works better as two small stations than one stretched layout. Each level gets its own unit, its own volunteer pair and its own power source, and nobody is dragging cords down a set of steps. Measure each terrace separately and count the steps between them, because the step count is what decides whether the second station is practical.
4. A compact layout built around a shared-lot load-in window
Where the approach is limited to a shared lot or a street-side space, the layout has to be one that can go up quickly inside the window the school can hold. That usually means fewer units placed closer to the access point, with the long walk reserved for things volunteers carry rather than things that roll. Confirm who is holding the parking spot and until when.
Why Marin and San Francisco PTA Volunteers Choose Astro Jump
Three things matter most to the volunteer who has to coordinate a school office, a custodian and a shared parking lot in the same hour.
Arriving before the families do, not with them. On a campus where the truck has a narrow window, early is the version of on schedule that actually works. Give us the open time and the window you have been granted, and the load-in is built backward from both.
We guarantee early delivery, or your money back.
The paperwork the school office will ask for. Schools and districts here commonly want a COI on file naming the school or the district ahead of the event. Ask your office what they need and when they need it the week you pick a date, so the request is not sitting in someone's inbox the day before the carnival.
Fully insured: general liability, workers' comp, and auto.
Something extra on a school booking, without another line item for the committee to defend. A school rental with more than one unit has room for a game that runs alongside the inflatables and keeps the upper grades occupied.
Smooth School Setup: a free sports or carnival game added to any school obstacle course or multi-unit rental.
Frequently Asked Questions
How wide does a gate need to be for a bounce house delivery?
Measure the clear opening at the narrowest point on the whole route, including any turn immediately on the other side of it, and send that number with your date request. A tight pedestrian gate does not rule out a carnival; it rules out certain units, and that is a question worth answering before a committee votes on a layout. If the wide access is a roll-up or a vehicle gate, say who can unlock it and when.
Can an inflatable go on a sloped school yard?
A unit has to sit on ground that is level enough to stay level with children in it, so a sloped yard is handled by finding the flattest rectangle on the site rather than by working around the grade. Walk the yard, find that rectangle, measure its length and width, and note the drop across it if there is one. On a terraced campus, measure each level on its own.
What if our school only has a shared parking lot for load-in?
That is common across San Rafael and San Francisco and it is a scheduling question, not an obstacle. Find out how long the school can keep a space clear and who is responsible for holding it, then give us that window when you book so the arrival is planned inside it. Tell us at the same time whether the route from that lot involves steps, a hill or a single narrow gate.
